This little gem is worth visiting.
A week ago on a holiday near Barnstaple, we were introduced to a cafe called “Treat Time”. It was a pretty horrid rainy day and we were wet – and I mean really wet. We just wanted to get back to our rented holiday apartment, but our son insisted we stop by Treat Time – one of his favourites. On the face of it, we were not in the mood for anything unusual or funky so had it not been for our son, we would never have visited a self-styled dessert parlour.
What a treat!
Given the weather was really horrid and the streets were empty, we were not surprised to see the place not exactly packed out. But what a treat it turn out to be.
Internally it was extremely well presented and we had a warm welcome from the (I assume) owner. It has a curious theme of a mix between seaside and 70’s diner. We liked it a lot and the presumed owner was just a really nice person – warm and chatty.
Although clearly focused on Italian ice cream, they have a range of other treats; and I understand the cakes are home-made.
We ordered a variety of cakes and drinks – yes of course I had coffee. One of my usuals – an Americano – with my cake.
Service with more than a smile
We were delighted with the presentation. The cake has been warmed and it was served with cream, and presented on the plate with style, care, attention to detail, with even with fresh strawberries.
And the coffee?
Often, coffee in a town cafe can be OK. This was not OK – it was terrific! Clearly it had been prepared with care that coffee deserves; and served with warm hospitality. The care and attention to detail of everything was spot-on.
A good coffee on a cold wet day is always welcome, but this coffee was crafted to a high standard. I loved it. Don’t let the style of the cup fool you – the style fitted the overall feel of the cafe and as I say the coffee was great. And I’m fussy about my coffee.
All I can say is – the next time I visit Barnstaple, I will be stopping at Treat Time again, and I suggest you might want to do the same. You can find Treat Time on Boutport Street.
